Days

Day 1:

We cross the border over the Jordan River and enter the Kingdom of Jordan.  Drive through the Gilead Mountains where the Prophet Elijah was born and arrive at Jerash.  This was a thriving Roman city and commerce center and is today one of the best preserved Roman archeological sites in the world.  We see Adrian’s Arch, The Street of Columns, The Oval Plaza, The Theaters, Nympheum, temples and hippodrome.  Continue to Petra for overnight.

 

Day 2

In the morning we explore the ancient city of Petra.  This was the capital of the powerful Nabbatean people who became rich in the spice trade.  Petra was settled in a narrow valley inside the Edom Mountains.  Many of its buildings were carved out in the rose-red sand stone and provide a unique and magnificent landscape.  We will see the famous Treasury building, the theater, tombs, palaces and temples.  In the afternoon we visit Moses’s Spring, where according to tradition  Moses hit the rock to provide water for the Israelites.  Drive through the Kings Highway to Wadi Rum.  Tonight we enjoy a Bedouin hospitality and dinner.

Day 3

In the morning we enjoy a two hour jeep ride among the cliffs, dunes and wild desert landscapes of Wadi Rum.  Here we can imagine how the Israelites felt during their forty years of wandering in the desert.  We visit the big dunes, the Nabbatean temple and the hiding places of Lawrence of Arabia. 

Drive north along the Desert Highway to Amman, the capital of Jordan.  Here we visit the citadel, once the location of the BIvblical city of Rabat Bnei Amon.

Day 4

Today we visit Madaba, the mosaic city.  First we see the magnificent Byzantine mosaic depicting a map of the Holy Land including Jerusalem.  Then we learn about the making of mosaics in a local workshop.  Drive to Mount Nebo where Moses gazed upon the Promised Land before opassing away.  Drive through the Dead Sea Road to Bethany on The Jordan, the traditional place where the Prophet Elijah rose to heaven and where the people of Israel crossed into the Promised Land.

Drive back to Jordan River Crossing and cross back to Israel.
