Days

Day 1

Arrive at Queen Alia International Airport where you will meet your guide and driver.  Transfer to Amman, Jordan’s capital city and largest city. 

Rest of the day at leisure.

Day 2

In the morning we will ascend to one of Amman’s hills and overlook the city from the citadel.  The view from here over the entire city is truly amazing.  Visit the ruins of the citadel where we see  thousands of years’ worth of history.  This was the Roman Philadelphia and the Biblical Rabat Bne Amon.  Drive to downtown Amman where we visit the Roman theater and the busy markets.

In the afternoon we visit the King Abdullah I mosque.  A truly beautiful building.

Day 3

Today is dedicated to the Roman city of Jerash.  Just an hour away from Amman, we visit the ruins of one of the best preserved Roman cities in the world.  Jerash was a member of The Decapolis union of cities and a major merchant and trade center.  We see the impressive Adrian’s Arch, theaters, Oval Square, Nympheum, Avenue of The Columns as well as other ruins.

Return to Amman.  Tonight we enjoy a lovely folklore evening and dinner

Day 4

Visit Iraq El Amir, the ruins of an impressive Greco Era villa.  This unique building, was built by a Greek noble in a combined Egyptian and Greco styles.  Continue to Madaba, where we visit the church of St. George to see the beautiful Byzantine mosaic depicting a map of the Holy Land.  Jerusalem is prominently featured on the map.  Madaba is also a center for mosaic production and we will visit a local workshop.  On to Mount Nebo, the site where Moses gazed upon the Promised Land.  Here we visit the church dedicated to Moses and look out over the Jordan Valley to the Holy Land. 

Drive to Petra, where we arrive in early evening.

Day 5

Today is dedicated to exploring Petra, “The Rose Red City Half as Old as Time”.  Petra was the capital city of the wealthy Nabbatean Empire.  The Nabbateans became rich with the spice and incense trade and built a city carved in the red cliffs of this remote location.  The city was forgotten for centuries, only to be “rediscovered” by a Swiss explorer – Johann Burkhardt in the 18th century.  We will walk along The Siq, the narrow canyon that leads into Petra while marveling at the natural beauty of the cliffs.  Once arriving into Petra, we marvel at the carved buildings, including The Treasury, theater, Royal Tombs, temples and more.

Day 6

In the morning we will drive south along the King’s Highway, an ancient trade route to Aqaba.  This is Jordan’s only port city and a famous resort on the Red Sea.  Upon arrival in Aqaba we will have free time to sit on the beach and enjoy the Red Sea.

Day 7

Today we explore the city of Aqaba.  We see the ruins of Ayla, and ancient site thought to be the Biblical Etzion Gaber.  We see the “big flag” representing the Arab Revolt of 1917.  We explore the busy street of the lively market before driving to Wadi Rum. 

Wadi Rum is a unique desert eco reserve where nature has created its best landscapes.  On a two hour jeep ride we explore the dunes, the canyons, the oases and the rich history of the area.  We will learn about Lawrence of Arabia who fought here during the Arab Revolt and experience Bedouin hospitality and tea. 

Tonight we enjoy a Bedouin dinner feast at our luxurious desert camp.

Day 8

Early this morning we depart Wadi Rum and drive north along the Desert Highway.  We stop at Karak to visit the impressive Castle.  This castle was built by the Crusaders and is considered one of the largest Crusader forts in the world.  Continue to Amman.

Transfer to Queen Alia International Airport for our flight back home
